Allotments

An allotment can be a great way to not only save money on buying your fruits and vegetables, but it can also be a good way to make friends, get exercise, and promote a healthy lifestyle. Supermarket food is often overpriced, covered with pesticides and lacks the quality of home-grown foods, and in times of economic hardship practises like keeping an allotment have become more popular as a way to save money and provide food for the family.

Depending on what you want to grow on your allotment, it does not have to be a massive chore to keep one. Many allotments do not require much upkeep, save for the obligatory weeding, watering and grounds maintenance. Most allotments only require a small annual charge for each lot, with you purchasing the necessary seeds and small plants needed to start yourself off. Seeds are surprisingly cheap, and with the large amounts you often get in a packet it can be possible, with the correct preservation, to continue using one packet of seeds for a year or more.

If you find it difficult to get out of the house, or you do not have much time from a busy schedule to do much with your time, then keeping an allotment can be a great solution. It can bring friendship opportunities to those who do not have much occasion to make friends, and for busy people it can provide a welcome break from their work.
